Nyamira County governor has said the county government is keen to support education in the region, despite the function being under the national government’s jurisdiction.
Addressing education stakeholders at the county headquarters on Tuesday when he donated books to a number of schools, Governor John Nyagarama said his government has embarked on improving infrastructure and facilities in a number of institutions.
The Nyamira county boss said his government would seek an approval from the county assembly to construct libraries in schools that are in dire need of the facility.
“I have a passion for education and my government has been keen to support institutions by helping them with facilities and improving their infrastructure. The function still falls under the national government but I am in the process of seeking approval from the county assembly to build a number of libraries in schools that require the facility,” he said.
Nyagarama said the county government was unlikely to 'relax' while the education sector in the region was facing a myriad of challenges.
“We know education is fundamental and we not only intend to equip our schools but also support children through bursaries. Through an educated society, we will be able to tackle some of the real economic challenges facing us as a county,” said Nyagarama.
He urged area leaders to work closely with his government in identifying regions that were in urgent need of help in terms of education in a bid to improve overall academic standards in the region.
