Girls from Kisumu’s Manyatta informal settlement have been challenged to take education seriously if they are to fight the poverty that is ravaging the area.
Area MCA Nereah Akoth Okombo raised concern that many girls in the area drop out of school at a tender age to engage in immorality, something she said is seriously staring to affect the level of girl child education in the area.
She warned that she will deal with the parents who will allow their children to drop out of school even when the county and the national government are doing everything possible to promote basic education in the country.
Ms Akoth wondered what a 15 year old girl will be left to do at home when her age mates in other parts of the country are taking the matter of learning seriously.
"It is indeed sad that children in this area don’t take anything about learning seriously. It is even sadder that most of them are girls. This is not fair especially at a time when basic education is a basic human right," she said.
"I therefore warn all parents here that if you will be found with a child who is not schooling, we are going to deal with you."
