The legislature calimed that the county boss only awards tenders to members of his family and close allies.

Awiti critised the manner in which tenders were being awarded in the county, claiming that even installation of street lights and garbage collection in Mombasa was being done by close associates of the governor.

“How come tenders are issued according to the 'whom do you know criteria'? Why is it that small tenders as well as multi-billion tenders are given out to either relatives or close associates of Joho, this is nepotism,” said Mr Awiti, when he hosted a delegation of five MCAs in a Mombasa hotel on Thursday.

This is not the first time the governor has been slammed over issuance of county tenders and employment opportunities.

Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar on Monday claimed that even those being admitted to work as inspectorate officers were relatives of the county executive.

“The resources in this county are enough for all of us if well distributed. However, they end up in the custody of a chosen few - only those who know the governor and his family. That is why most of the residents in Mombasa complain of poverty and unemployment,” said Mr Omar.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, however, dismissed the claims saying that he was not in charge of procurement.

The governor said anyone dragging his name in such allegations was only defaming him.

“I want to urge leaders to be factual when addressing some issues. How is the governor and tenders related? There is a procurement officer who takes care of all tendering processes as directed by the Constitution,” said Joho.
