Mohammed Ali (Nyali, Independent) said on Tuesday it is worrying that women still prefer giving birth in health facilities despite numerous calls that the practice is safe especially for newborn babies.

"Nyali is among constituencies with good facilities but it saddens me that there are more women who don't visit this facilities to deliver," Ali said in Nairobi.

"I want to take this as a personal challenge and encourage mothers to deliver in hospitals. We shouldn't be looking at the cost but the safety of the exercise."

He said the national government should consider channeling more resources to counties so that governors can increase the helath sector budget since health is now a devolved industry.

President Uhuru Kenyatta during his inauguration speech at Safaricom International Sports Centre in Kasarani said health would be a key priority for government as he embarks on serving his last term as commander in chief.

This is, however, yet to be seen as the national Treasury last week said the government is broke and as a result it is considering cutting cash allocation to counties by between Sh15 billion and Sh18 billion.
