Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has presented a bill in Parliament that seeks to compel national government to establish referral hospitals across all the 47 conuties in the country.
Speaking when he gave notice of motion in the National Assembly on Wednesday, the first-term lawmaker noted that Article 43 of the Kenyan constitution provides that every person has a right to the highest attainable standard of health which includes a right to health care service.
According to the legislator, the country so far relies on two referral hospitals; Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, which hr believes is not consistent with the provisions of the constitution.
" ....this house asks the government to fast track the establishment of a national referral hospital in Mombasa with a view to having a facility to cater for sophisticated diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative health care needs in the region requiring more complex technology and requiring trained personnel," he said.
The Coast General Hospital is the main health facility in the entire Coast region. However, it cannot handle complex surgical operations.
