Nyali MP Hezron Awiti was on Monday grilled by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials over containers found at his Awanad Container Freight Station.
According to a source who spoke to the Nation, the MP was quizzed after some containers which are said to have disappeared from the Port of Mombasa, were allegedly found at his freight station.
The MP, however, denied the accusations, saying he was not involved in the matter.
“I was there for three hours in the morning. They said they cannot tell me how many containers are in question. I am very clean and in fact I am no longer the director there. If they have anything, they should call the manager and ask him or do investigations,” said Awiti.
On her part, KRA southern region senior assistant communication commissioner Fatma Yusuf, said she wasn't aware of the allegations, promising to give official communication at a later stage.
This comes after the authority unearthed a tax evasion syndicate at the Port of Mombasa.
KRA commissioner general John Njiraini said 104 containers were illegally removed from the port between June and July, leading to a loss of Sh100 million.
Njiriani said different players in the sector including importers and their clearing agents, transport service providers, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and KRA staff are suspected of being involved in the illegal business.
He further said they will soon impound the 29 trucks which ferried the cargo out of the port, adding that they are committed to ensuring the culprits are brought to book and the taxes recovered.
