Nyali MP, Hezron Awiti, has re-affirmed his interest in vying for the Mombasa Governor position after rumors spread that he would be somebody’s running mate in 2017.
Addressing the media over the weekend, Awiti said he is still in the governor's race come 2017, and told his rivals to stop spreading propaganda.
“They are spreading rumors that I am not going to run. Tell them I am nobody’s running mate and I will not be cowed by what they say I will be the governor of Mombasa come 2017,” said Awiti.
The CORD MP has not been in good terms politically with his party mate Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, an ordeal that was clearly pointed out on last year's Mashujaa Day celebrations, where Joho called those who criticized his leadership “idiots” hinting at Awiti who has been doing so for a long time.
Critics, however, say that the MPs' bid to vie for governor puts CORD leader Raila Odinga in a tight spot as current Governor Joho enjoys a larger voters’ influence at the Coast region and Awiti enjoys support from the CORD leader.
