Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has dismissed calls by a section of coastal leaders allied to opposition over plans to separate  the region from the rest of Kenya.

The MP who vied as an Independent candidate during the August 8 polls instead said the leaders pushing for separation should handle the problems facing the coastal people such as uncollected garbage, unemployment, and drug abuse.

According to the lawmaker, NASA leaders are only pushing for secession for their own benefit.

"I call on the leaders to stop being selfish instead love and assist others by educating and developing the coastal region,'' he wrote on Facebook page.

He added that the leaders' dreams of secession is only meant to benefit themselves and their families.

He questioned the leaders' agenda for calling separation but criticized the same plans by MRC in 2012.

"MRC were tortured when they called for separation. The same leaders kept mum, now they are saying the coastal region is not in Kenya, I wish to confirm that coast is in Kenya and it will remain to be in Kenya,'' he stated.
