Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has urged the Ministry of Education to move with speed and curb the rising arson cases which is threatening to cripple the learning in public schools.
Speaking Tuesday when he toured St Augustine Primary School where fire destroyed a dormitory on Sunday night, Awiti also cautioned leaders against using the crisis to gain political mileage.
“The future of this nation depends on this generation and education is the backbone of a prosperous nation. We must make sure that the situation is contained," the lawmaker said.
The Nyali MP also called on the education stakeholders to embrace dialogue as they look for solutions to the crisis arguing that re-introduction of corporal punishment could complicate the situation further.
Mombasa County commissioner Maalim Mohammed said Monday the fire at St Augustine Primary School was not as a result of arson.
Over 100 school have been affected by fires this term and 200 students and teachers arrested over the same.
