Incumbent Nyamira Governor John Nyaragama and former Kitutu Masaba MP Walter Nyambati will become relevant in the history of Gusii politics if they retire honourably, a leading gubernatorial aspirant has said.

The two are in their late 70s and are expected to feature in 2017 gubernatorial race, an decision which hasn’t gone well with Charles Mochama.

Mochama, who was speaking in his Kisii home on Tuesday, said the two were ‘too old’ to serve, hence unfit to steer economic growth in the county.

“I have too much respect in them (Nyambati and Nyagarama), but I think time to hung up the boots has come. They have done a good work before and any attempt to stand in the gubernatorial race will make them lose relevance in Gusii politics,” Mochama said.

“I do not rate people based on their age but I think they are too old and unfit to steer Nyamira to the right direction in terms of coming up with concrete ideas that can boost our economy,” he said.

Mochama questioned the track record of the two politicians, and challenged them to retire to avoid ‘inevitable’ embarrassment in the 2017 race.

“They have been tested and none has excelled. Nyambati failed when he was the Kitutu Masaba MP and Nyagarama is now a 'chief of corruption' in the county. I think it is important for them to retire honourably as a way of avoiding embarrassing defeat in 2017 polls,” added Mochama.

According to him, the two should play an advisory role to young leadership in the county and use most of their time with family members.

“Their time is now gone and they have to admit that. They did their part and time for exit from politics to pave way for the new crop of leadership is here,” added Mochama.
