Chiefs and their assistants in Nyamira County have been blamed over the rise in FGM cases in the county.
According to County Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru, the local administrators are not performing their duties well.
The county chief added that parents have been conducting FGM on girls secretly in villages.
“We are aware that the illegal practice is being carried secretly in villages and no one has reported the matter to police.
"Chiefs, their assistants and Nyumba Kumi officials have allowed girls to undergo the outlawed FGM.
"I wish to put it clear that any government official who is not doing his or her work as by the law will be punished for not reporting crimes in their area of administration,” he stated.
Nakoru said women are the first suspects committing the crimes but the law won’t spare them.
“The law does not know whether you are a woman or not. Everyone must obey the law by avoiding activities that contravenes the laws of the land," he added.
