The county government of Nyamira is contemplating starting its own water and sanitation company to improve access to safe drinking water to its residents.
Speaking when he opened the Kenya Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene project (KIWASH) workshop, Governor John Nyagarama said much progress has been made on its formation and once completed, it will help address water connection and sewerage issues in the county.
Nyagarama noted that currently, only 500 households are connected to clean water and 6, 600 accessed potable water in the last three years since he took power.
"We are in the initial stages of forming our water and sanitation company that will hasten the process of connecting our people to clean water and build a sewer system,"said Nyagarama.
He added that the county will also drill more boreholes across the county to improve sanitation of the Nyamira people.
The formation of the water company comes barely three months after the Gusii Water Company in Kisii County sacked an official who presents Nyamira County over unclear circumstances.
Nyamira County currently doesn't have a sewerage system. KIWASH is sponsored by an US based non governmental organisation, USAid.
