The county government of Nyamira has been urged to expedite construction of Gesima-Esani Road which has remained undone even after contractors showed some signs of commencing the project.

According to residents, the stalemate has paralysed transport in the region with motorists forced to use an alternative route, which is longer, for over a month now.

Speaking on Monday to the press, area residents led by Mr Thomas Orina accused the road committee in the county government of failing to intervene in the issue even after having written to them severally.

“We are disappointed that someone can initiate a project and go on missing. They have really paralysed transport activities and many of us prefer a longer route because the work here remains undone. The transport committee has remained mum over the issue,” he said.

They urged the county government to terminate the contract and award it to a serious construction company since only one lane was functional.

“It’s only one lane that murrum hasn’t been hipped on it meaning two vehicles cannot use it concurrently. It is advisable for the government to consider revoking the contract and give it to a serious bidder,” he added.

When contacted on phone, county assembly chairman for roads Mr Ben Sironga said the committee had launched investigations over the stalemate and they were keen to take a convenient action.

“As a committee we have already heard the concerns and we are about to table our findings. I don’t want to pre-empt and it will be appropriate if residents wait for a moment,” he said.
