Political leadership from Nyamira County has been urged to rise up to the occasion and invest in the education system as a way of improving the economic status of the county government.

Speaking on Sunday at Nyamusi area, leading academician Dr Evans Nyandoro said the county government will fail to meet its objectives if it continued to give education a wide berth despite the education docket still being under the national government.

Nyandoro said many children from the region were unable to access quality education due to poverty and hence making the county lag behind in terms of literacy.

“Education is key in any society and the county government of Nyamira has failed to show that to us. We need to be more vigorous even if the docket is still under the national government. They should invest more in education if at all we want to fight ignorance in our county,” he said.

He urged the Nyamira county assembly to set aside more funds that could be disbursed as bursaries to children from vulnerable families in a bid to reduce the rampant cases of school dropouts.

“Many of our potential children are dropping out of school because they do not have money to fund their education. The county assembly should consider increasing the allocation in subsequent budgets even in their supplementary estimates in a bid to help our young scholars,” he added.

The Nyamira County government has failed to kick-start the bursary allocation due to in-fighting between the executive and the assembly over the organ that should be responsible to award the bursaries.
