Nyamira County commissioner Isaiah Nakoru has urged local leaders not to politicize the construction of the Bonyunyu dam project.

Nakoru said that a section of leaders, whom he did not mention have been feeding residents with wrong information in regard to the construction of the Sh5 billion dam on Gucha River.

He also warned that the government will take a stern action against individuals suspected of burning houses belonging to residents backing the project.

“This dam should cease being a campaign tool. Leaders should stop lying to the locals that their land will forcefully be taken away to pave the way for its construction,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

Upon completion, the dam is expected to solve the problem of water shortage in Nyamira and Kisii counties. The remarks of the county commissioner come in the wake of confrontation among residents of Miriri, Gachuba ward, Kitutu Masaba.

Early this year, Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa assured residents of compensation.

The construction of the dam, which is expected to cover four acres of land, is expected to kick off.

The feasibility test of the dam project is in the second phase.
