Nyamira County Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair Ms Mary Orwenyo has called on the government to formulate laws that will see rapists and other sexual offenders castrated.
Speaking in Nyamira on Thursdat when the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC) held a daylong meeting with residents who expressed their views on penalties for capital offenders, Ms Orwenyo proposed that the government castrates the perpetrators who defile and rape young girls.
She said the harsh penalty would curb such incidents and thus help decongest prisons in the long run.
The chairperson said many of the offenders have been enjoying life in prisons and are set free without learning a life time lesson.
"We want the government to formulate stern laws to punish the sexual offenders in the country so that we decongest our prisons. They should even be castrated so as we reduce the rising cases of rape and defilement. This will deter others from engaging in such vices," she added.
POMAC gives advise to the President on the penalties and pardons of capital offenders.
The committee is on a countrywide tour to collect views from the public on the penalties to be carried on capital offenders.
