Matatu operators along Bonyama-Nyamusi in Nyamira County have threatened to boycott remitting taxes to the county government of Nyamira due to the poor state of the road.

Speaking at Bonyama on Sunday, the operators accused the county government of failing to act despite several attempts to reach the Public Works department.

They issued a two-week notice to the county government to repair the road and insisted that they would chase away county employees working with the tax department if their grievances are not addressed by the lapse of the period.

"We are tax compliant, there is no month or day that we failed to do our part. However, it is really saddening that the county government only concentrates on collecting taxes without improving the roads in return. We will boycott remitting taxes if the situation is not fixed in two weeks’ time,” said Albert Maina, who chairs the Matatu association from the region.

According to them, the ongoing rains in the region have paralysed businesses with many of them opting to stay away during the period.

“We are getting massive loses during this rainy period. Some of us have opted to stay at home because the road is completely impassable. It is difficult to sustain our families and we want urgent action taken by the county government,” he added.
