University and colleges graduates from Nyamira County could get paid internships in the county government’s departments if a Bill by Gesima MCA is passed.
The Gesima MCA Mr Ken Atuti, a former lecturer at Kisii University, tabled the Bill in the county assembly on Thursday for First Reading. It is hoped that if passed it could help hundreds of youths from the region who remain jobless despite having graduated from various colleges.
Speaking to this writer on phone, Atuti said freshly graduated students from the county will be paid up to Sh25,000 per month as they work in the relevant departments as they wait for permanent absorption.
He, however, said the beneficiaries will be those who excel in their studies by getting First Class honours or distinctions at the Diploma level.
“I tabled the Bill of Payable Post Internship that will help our brilliant minds who haven’t been able to get permanent jobs in both the private and public sectors. I know the number could be high that is why I am specific that only those with exemplary qualifications. They will be paid up to Sh25,000 per month depending on their job description,” he said.
He said he was optimistic that the Bill will be passed into law since most of his colleagues had given input to make it better and was ready for any amendments to make it favourable to residents.
“It will be a motivation to our students to be innovative and creative. They will have to work hard to excel. Many of my colleagues have given their input making me optimistic that it will be supported,” he said.
This is the second time a similar Bill is introduced to the house after the initial one was rejected with the education committee citing inconsistencies
