A section of Nyamira County leaders allied to the ODM now want the embattled electoral body commissioners jailed over the death of six protesters who died during the anti-IEBC demos.
The calls come barely hours after the commissioners led by chairman Ahmed Isaack Hassan agreed to vacate office through a politically negotiated process.
On his part, North Mugirango MP and Nyamira branch ODM secretary general Charles Geni challenged the Senate-National Assembly joint committee grilling the commissioners to instead divert a part of the bosses' hefty send off package towards the upkeep of the bereaved families.
“We have people who died for exercising their rights during the anti-IEBC demonstrations. I plead with the committee to ensure part of the send off package of the commissioners goes to these families," he said.
“It has taken long for these commissioners to resign and time has come for them to take the blame for the deaths of the demonstrators. They have been holding the country at ransom only to show signs of resigning. The DPP should now initiate murder charges against them,” added Kemera MCA James Mating’a.
Former Nyamira County assembly majority leader Beuttah Omanga added: “These people should be held accountable for the shooting of peaceful demonstrators. They should be behind bars and I wonder when I hear that they want a hefty send off package”.
