The ministry of public works in Nyamira County has announced a new measure to help expedite renovation of a number of feeder roads in the county following public outcry over the poor state of roads.

Roads and Public Works CeC Janet Komenda on Friday told reporters that workers will be required to work extra hours in a day including weekends.

Komenda admitted slow pace in renovation of certain roads and also gave a similar warning to sluggish contractors urging them to heed to public demands or have their contracts revoked.

“As a ministry, we have consulted widely and settled on paying our workers overtime including weekends so that they solve this problem. We are keen to see these roads completed in time to avoid persistent complaints from the public. The same will apply to the private contractors because they too have to do their job or lose it,” she said.

The CeC was, however, cautious about ministry employees taking the advantage to consider working overtime rather than doing their work appropriately during the normal working hours.

“That doesn’t give them thego-ahead to snub work during normal working hours. In fact, we will be monitoring them to avoid cases of some employees targeting the overtime to make money. We will be compelled to sack those culpable,” she added.

Komenda was, however, optimistic that the county government had done well in managing roads saying the initial 240km across the four constituencies had almost been done in a period of two years despite limited resources.
