The residents who were stranded in Nyamira town on Tuesday said matatu operators have exploited fare charges due to the higher number of those travelling.
“I woke up early so that I can get a bus to Nairobi but when I arrived at the stage, I was shocked to learn that buses were demanding Sh2,000 from passengers," said Wilfred Omoke.
Omoke urged the government to allow night travels for those travelling to work to report to avoid being sacked.
He noted that only one bus came to pick the passengers leaving several others stranded.
“We have children going back to school and other Kenyans travelling back to their places of work. The government must intervene and remove the ban for the matatus to start operating during the night,” he added.
Jennifer Kemuma , said she won’t travel back to Nairobi until the fare drops.
She asked traffic police officers to be on high alert to arrest drivers and matatus who may take advantage of the situation to carry excess passengers and overload luggage to curb accidents.
