A Nyamira farmer has urged residents to embrace aquaculture to supplement farm produce and boost their incomes.
Lilian Kerubo from Bonyunyu village in West Mugirango constituency, says since she ventured into fish farming she has been reaping huge profits.
She called on women to avoid being overly dependent on their husbands and instead to engage in fish farming among other activities that can generate income for them.
"We depend so much on our husbands, but it is now time to change that and be independent. Through fish farming, I proudly stand empowered economically," attested Kerubo.
She, however, says starting up a fish farm requires hard work and dedication before on can start reaping benefits.
"It has not been easy because it is demanding, but through the support from my husband and other family members, I have managed to achieve a lot," she adds.
She observes that the main challenge for her has been thieves who steal her fish at night and the vultures that feed on fish.
She has appealed for the county government to support fish farmers in the county by providing farmers with nets and expert advice.
