Nyamira County residents now want the county government to ban motorists from using a road that connects Nyainogu and Nyabara Ibere market due to danger posed to them by speeding vehicles and motorbikes.
This comes after at least five people (pedestrians) were involved in fatal accidents in September 2015 on the road.
Speaking to Hivisasa in an interview on Thursday, the residents, led by Mr Cornelius Manwa said the road (recently innovated) was too steep to be used by motorists.
Manwa urged the county government to ban motorists from using the road to prevent more accidents.
“We appreciate the commitment of the county government to renovate the road but it is costing us more lives than we thought. At least five people have been involved in fatal accidents and one was permanently crippled. The county government should close this route and dedicate it to only pedestrians,” he said.
They said though the move might be received with criticism from motorists, it was the only solution to the crisis.
He added, “We know it will not appeal to them (motorists) but they have to bear with us."
Their plea was supported by the area Member of the County Assembly Buttah Omanga who said he was in touch with the Roads Committee to solve the crisis.
“They have already informed me and I have informed the Roads Committee. I am waiting for their decision and hope they will consider it,” Omanga said on phone.
