The county government of Nyamira has embarked on the process of inspecting the status of sanitation in schools with more emphasis put on kitchens and the people managing them.

The two months exercise will visit all institutions which offer boarding facilities and will submit a report to the department of health.

Speaking during the launch of the exercise at Mwongori Secondary School on Tuesday, county chief health officer Dr. Douglas Bosire said that the program was precipitated by raising the number of school students admitted in various hospitals following difficulties emerging after allegedly consuming meals in their respective institutions.

“Public hospitals across the county have been receiving a number of students who suffers from constipation and other poor sanitation related complications. We have resorted to the inspecting of these institutions so that we ensure that our schools operate in a clean environment especially in kitchens where food is prepared,” he said.

He said that his department will be compelled to take action against the institutions which will be found operating under unsanitary conditions.

He also urged area institutions to consider recruiting chefs who were qualified from recognized institutions as a way of combating rising incidents of students suffering from complications associated to poor quality of food they take.
