Hundreds of schools; both primary and secondary schools from Nyamira County are set to receive sanitary pads and motivational talks courtesy of Affirmative Action Social Development Fund, area Women Representative Alice Chae has confirmed.
The programme, which is scheduled to commence in a fortnight, will target class 7 and 8 girls and secondary day schools which were identified through thorough scrutiny.
Chae said the programme will substantially reduce rates of absenteeism of girls from underprivileged backgrounds during their menstrual cycle.
“We will start the programme of giving sanitary towels to class 7 and 8 pupils alongside those in secondary schools from selected day schools across the county. We have already identified the institutions and what remains is systematic delivery,” she said.
“As a parent, I want our girls to remain in school during menstrual cycle so that they too get same learning time with the rest. We want to do away with their absenteeism,” she added.
She said the team that will be in charge will be conducting motivational talks and career training for those in secondary school concurrent with issuance of sanitary pads.
“We will also combine motivational talks and career training so that our children are properly prepared to face the world after school. The training will be done by a team of experts,” she said.
