Nyamira County Assembly speaker has been backed by some politicians to run for gubernatorial seat in 2017 polls.
Speaker Joash Nyamoko has been making inroads in all five sub-counties from the region in his Bunge Mashinani initiative and could be joining another host of contenders to run against incumbent John Nyagarama.
Speaking on Sunday at Nyamusi region during a fundraiser, North Mugirango MP Charles Geni said he would support the speaker all the times and said he was the man fit to get the county out of persistent political squabbling.
“I want to challenge Nyamoko to go for gubernatorial seat. He has demonstrated in the assembly that he can help the county gather momentum in economic development. He is politically neutral and can unite all our leaders. This is the time for him to step up and take the mantle,” he said.
County Women Representative Alice Chae echoed Geni’s sentiments and urged the speaker to take a second thought and run for the seat.
“Ever since he took over the assembly, he has been able to control it and we rarely hear divisions in the assembly like in many parts of the country. This is the time for him to grasp the opportunity and go for the seat. He is a knowledgeable man and I think he can guide the country to realise most pressing economic agendas,” she said.
However, Nyamoko when contacted on phone said he was comfortable to offer leadership in the assembly and would make his decisions later on towards general elections.
“I respect them (Geni and Chae) but for now I am the county speaker. We still have a lot to do but in politics anything is possible. Let’s work first for our people,” he said.
