Women groups from Nyamira have a reason to smile after a US based non-profit organisation launched a kitty that will help them acquire loans interest free.

Nyamira Diaspora Women Group was formed in 2010 and has been working towards improving the welfare of women in the county.

Group Director Mrs Mercy Millar Abuga on Thursday said the group has resorted to giving loans to women without interest as a modest way of empowering them. The beneficiaries expected to return the loans within a period of one year.

Mrs Abuga said the organisation will only consider groups that have shown the will to thrive by launching a series of profit making projects in the region.

“We are a non- profit making organization and our major aim is to boost women by empowering them. The board agreed that we will be giving loans without asking for interests so that we can help our women prosper. We will however limit it to groups that have shown ability to thrive based on projects they have launched so far,” she said.

She urged area women to seize the opportunity and use it as a way of becoming financially independent from their male counterparts.

“I grew up here and I know what our women go through. I hope this is a glorious opportunity of evolving from financially dependent to independent. The regulations are not that tough,” she said.

She distanced the group’s activities from politics following rumours that it was closely associated with a top aspirant in women representative seat based in US Dr Joy Kerubo.

“Joy (Kerubo) is one of us but the group has nothing to do with her political persuasion. We have been in existence for long even before she declared her political interests,” she said.
