School girls from Nyamira County have a reason to smile after a youth group joined in distributing sanitary towels among girls from the less fortunate families.
The program is expected to cover all the 20 wards from the region and is also expected to be carried after two months, to give an allowance to a similar campaign being spearheaded by Governor John Nyagarama’s wife, Naomi Nyagarama.
Chairman Peter Magaki of Pillar’s International on Tuesday said the group reverted to supporting the girl child following reported cases of girls bowing out of the school during their menstrual cycles hence affecting their education negatively.
“It’s really shameful that we are having girls dropping out of school simply because of their menstrual cycle. We can’t allow that to go on and as a charity youth group, we will be distributing sanitary towels to school girls every two months in all the 20 wards,” he said.
Magaki said the group would use church and institutions as centers for distribution and urged the provincial administration to help identify the neediest cases.
“We are set to use institutions and churches as distribution centers, but it will be prudent if chiefs and their assistants help us identify the neediest cases since we will be working at the grassroots,” he added.
He hailed the World Vision, Dr. Nyandoro Kambi Foundation and other area leaders for supporting the group to attain its objectives to support social activities since it was founded in 2012.
