A group of Nyamira youths have questioned the ‘little’ allocation of funds to the youths and sports sector in the recently concluded budgeting by the county government.

Led by their leader Ogari Maeche, they accused the county assembly and the executive of reducing the allocation to the department from initial proposal of Sh200 million to Sh120 million, predicting a major stall of youths activities in the 2015/16 financial year.

According to them, the youth league had submitted a proposal that would have seen several youths receive loans and subsequently set businesses that would enable them create jobs.

“As youths from the county, we are utterly shocked with the little allocation to the youth and sports docket. The governor had promised to persuade MCAs to increase the allocation from Sh100 million to Sh200 million so that our youths could go for small loans,” he said.

They blamed MCAs for allegedly waging a war against the majority youthful population and threatened to organise a demonstration against the county leadership.

“We are going to traverse the county and tell our youths what is going on. The MCAs have been a major impediment to youth empowerment in the county and son they will regret their antics,’ added Victor Orina.

County executive in charge of youth, sports and culture John Omwanza defended the move to slash the funds but promised decisive programmes that would see youths benefit.

“It was impossible to put Sh200 million only on youths, they should remember that we also have department of sports and culture which also requires funding. I would like to urge them that the 280million in the entire sector will be managed well,” he said.
