North Mugirango Member of Parliament Joash Nyamoko was on Tuesday elected the National Assembly Broadcasting and Library Committee chair.
The lawmaker, who took over from his Embakasi North counterpart James Mwangi, who had been elected to the post contrary to his Jubilee Party's will, was elected unopposed.
Speaking after capturing the post at the parliament buildings, Nyamoko pledged to spell out the representation, legislation and oversight responsibilities of the committee, most of which are unknown to most Kenyans.
He also promised to ensure that Kenyans benefit from their numerous information sources.
''''We will focus our energy towards strengthening the committee and ensuring that the general public gets information as per the law,'' he said.
His election comes amid a brewing row between the government through its communication regulation body Communication Authority (CA) and several media firms following the state's decision to switch off a number of them Tuesday.
Royal Media Service, Nation Group and Standard Group Media broadcasting firms were thrown in the dark after their television and radio stations were disconnected in a move allegedly in line with the government's warning against live streaming on the opposition leader Raila Odinga's controversial inauguration.
They resorted to airing their programmes through social media.
