Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has now appealed to the government and other football stakeholders in the country to give national soccer side Harambee Stars more support to enable the team make it to the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) bonanza to be held in Cameroon in 2019.
In a statement on Thursday,Nyamweya also lauded Stars for their heroics during the recently held Cecafa senior challenge tourney in which they emerged victorious after pipping Zanzibar Heroes 3-2 in post match penalties at the Kenyatta Stadium Machakos to bag the title.
"The victory over Zanzibar Heroes was a demonstration of Kenya's position in the region as a football powerhouse and testament to the fact that with a little more support,Kenya is a football giant in Africa," read part of the statement.
The former football administrator added that the victory was a consolation for the country after losing out on the rights to host the African Nations Championship (Chan) in 2018 owing to poor preparations.
"The victory has aptly consoled the nation from the Confederation of Africa Football (Caf) decision and gone further to give Kenyans a hint of what they would have expected had we attained the rights to host Africa's second-tier tournament," he added.
