South Mugirango MP and Kenya National Congress governorship aspirant Mr Manson Nyamweya on Saturday called on Kenyans to liberate themselves from the Jubilee government at the ballot on August 8.
The legislator said a vote for Nasa was the only available option left for voters fed up with the excesses of the Jubilee regime.
"A vote for Nasa is a vote for freedom from the shackles of oppression and grinding poverty. As voters, we are the only ones who have the power to make that choice," said Mr Nyamweya.
He termed the current economic challenges facing the country “a self-imposed burden that Jubilee had brought on Kenyans through rash and reckless economic policies”.
Speaking at KNC offices at a press briefing, he blamed the Jubilee government for the current economic woes facing the country, saying companies were experiencing massive losses due to the unfavorable investment climate.
“Supermarkets and retail chains are closing due to high taxes, low returns and lack of affordable credit from banks to expand their investment. Staff layoffs have become the trend since the Jubilee regime took power,” said Mr Nyamweya.
He said the government had failed to rein in its careless spending habits, resulting in huge debts that would take years to clear.
“Jubilee’s reckless spending and profligate graft has landed the country in the bottomless pit of trillion-shilling debt. We are a country sinking in a tyranny of debts which will take us decades to repay,” said Mr Nyamweya.
He criticized the government’s decision to engage in heavy borrowing to finance mega projects like the Standard Gauge Railway and other infrastructure projects.
“In a mere four years, Jubilee has borrowed more than we borrowed in the previous 50 years of independence to finance mega projects whose benefit is not commensurate with the costs. As a trained economist, I know we are living under a rogue borrowing schedule that is a ticking time bomb likely to sabotage our economy,” MP said.
He named the increasing cost of living as a signal that all was not well in the country, saying that high prices of consumer goods were forcing Kenyans to compromise on healthy diets and proper housing in a bid to live within their meager incomes.
“Prices of consumer goods are frequently increasing, pushing the cost of living way above the citizens’ meagre incomes. Our people have been forced to relocate to the slums in big towns in order to survive within their income brackets,” he alleged.
He hit out at Jubilee for using its tyranny of numbers in the Senate and Parliament to authorize heavy borrowing and public spending that had increased the country’s national debts.
“Jubilee has misused its tyranny of numbers to enslave Kenyans in a tyranny of debts. We must come together and throw its yoke off our shoulders by voting for Nasa onAugust 8,” he said.
Mr Nyamweya accused Jubilee of practicing skewed employment policies which had resulted in qualified personnel from opposition strongholds being locked pout of government jobs.
“Our people who have certificates and education secured expensively in local and international universities are being denied jobs for the simple reason that they come from the wrong tribe or region. This unwritten but applied policy of ethnocentric employment is patently illegal and acceptable,” said Mr Nyamweya.
He asked the government to ensure that all regions were catered for during its development planning and recruitment processes, saying all qualified Kenyans had a right to state jobs and services.
“Jubilee must be guided by the law and principles of justice, equity and accountability that were the foundation of our constitution. Development projects and government jobs are not a favour from government and we should not be forced to beg for what is legally ours,” the MP said.
