Residents of Nyando in Kisumu county have been urged to scale up hygienic standards following fears of cholera outbreak in the region.
Nyando Sub-County Public Health Officer Paul Masanga issued the alert following a two-day closure of the fish parlor at Ahero market due to a sewage spillage.
The closure however triggered an uproar by the fishmongers that nearly degenerated into a demonstration except for the health officials standing their ground.
The health officers pointed out that the cholera scare had been triggered by an acute water shortage due to a dry spell that is currently ravaging the county.
Masanga spoke on Tuesday after the public health officers reopened the fish market citing satisfactory response to raised health concerns
"We have reopened the fish market at Ahero after the traders attended to the health dangers and following an agreement that they will adhere to high hygienic standards in their operations," said Masanga.
The officer further sent a strong message to the area residents urging them to take extra measures as regards to hygiene.
He at the same time, warned those residing along the Nyando river belt against polluting the river adding that those found culpable will face the full wrath of the law.
He also urged the residents to ensure that they construct latrines within their homes and make proper use of them.
