Nyanza region will benefit from Sh13.9 million allocated in the financial year 2015/16 by the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK).
NFDK Chairperson Kristina Pratt said they will be giving out cash donations totaling to Sh4.2 million to 16 institutions in the region.
The chairperson said they shall also present assertive devices to 70 individual worth Sh1.4 million.
“Later, our officers shall traverse across the region through most sub counties and issue additional equipment to over 475 more individuals totaling to about Sh9.7 million," she said.
Speaking during the donation of the equipment worth Sh6.6 million in Kisumu, Pratt appealed to the county governments within the region to dedicate some funds in their annual budgets for the facilities of PWDs.
“This especially in schools, homes and rehabilitation centres within the counties to undertake their infrastructural development needs," she said.
She said there are many existing barriers that hinder Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from making progress in the society.
Pratt said the barriers exclude PWDs from full and effective participation in the society leading them to have limited access to education, employment, healthcare as well as political participation and access to justice.
She also asked the people presented with the items not to be deceived by others to sell their equipment.
“We shall be following closely to know how you are using your item and with the assistance of the Regional Coordinator office and will take stern measures on anybody doing so,” she said in a speech read on her behalf by the Vice chairperson Peter Nyakiamo.
