Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nyanza have welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to withdraw the case against President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Nyanza IDPs Chairman Nelson Owegi said that the withdrawal will now give President Uhuru time to ensure victims of the 2007-2008 Post Election Violence (PEV) get justice.
“We are happy the president has now been let off the hook. Let him now take this moment to resettle IDPs,” Owegi said.
Speaking in Kisumu, Owegi called on the president to fast-track the establishment of the International and Organised Crimes Division of the High Court to address the local cases arising from the PEV.
He said those who were accused of murder and looting of property should be immediately rounded up and charged in the court upon its establishment.
“The cases which did not qualify to be tried at The Hague should now be tried locally under the new court,” Owegi stated.
The chairman said that the International and Organized Crimes Division court was now left as the only hope for the PEV victims.
Owegi said that most IDPs in the Nyanza region have never been compensated as compared with other IDPs in the country and most of them are living in deplorable conditions.
