As he approaches the sunset years of his illustrious political career spanning over three decades, the battle to inherit NASA leader Raila Odinga's political capital will be titanic especially in his traditional Luo Nyanza turf.
On paper, Siaya Senator James Orengo has an upper hand to take over from the former Prime Minister. But it will not be easy especially with the presence of Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo whose popularity in the region might reshuffle the political game plan.
A political heavyweight in his own rights, Amollo might spoil the party for the legendary Orengo who is in his fourth decade in politics- so far the longest serving politician in the region.
Why Amollo? Look at it this way: from which political bible was he indoctrinated? Of course Raila's. Under the ODM leader, the Rarieda man has developed his political muscle which will no doubt springboard his future political ambitions.
But of importance to the former ombudsman is his unique brand of politics which seems to resonate well with masses across both sides of the political divide. His development approach to politics has won him many hearts. This has made him appear like a technocrat more than a politician. One might even think that he is running an NGO to uplift the welfare of his constituents.
Boasting a big political name already, Amollo is a no push over in Raila succession race in case the former Premier hangs his political boots. And with his relatively young age, the brilliant lawyer might just eclipse Orengo to become the region's political kingpin. But being a shrewd politician, the Senate Minority leader will not go down easily.
