Early motherhood coupled by teenage pregnancy is still a hindrance to girl child education in Siaya and Kisumu Counties.
Statistics reveal that Nyanza is leading nationally with 27 percent proportion of teens aged between 15-19 years have begun childbearing.
Nyanza Initiative for Girl’s Education and Empowerment (NIGEE), an NGO working in Nyanza and Western Kenya Region, has for this reason embarked on an education fund raiser walk to collect funds towards fees to enroll more girls back in school.
Siaya County First lady Rosella Rasanga, who was speaking at Siaya Stadium after participating in the 17 km walk by NIGEE, mentioned that the gap between the boy child and the girl child is still wide; hence there is need for concerted efforts in supporting and retaining girls in schools.
She said girls' education is important, since they are the most vulnerable in the society, further moving quick to state that the boy child has not been left behind either.
The patron of NIGEE Dr Kawango Agot echoed the same, saying that there are many girls in Nyanza who have dropped out of school.
“Most of these girls who have dropped out still do not have an opportunity to go back to school and realize their dreams,” said Agot.
She therefore encouraged members of the society to join hands in raising their own fund towards the support of education in the society instead of waiting for donor or government funding which are always not enough for all.
