Speaking to the media at the governor's residence in Nyeri town, Ambassador Wamathai said that if the Senate sends Governor Gachagua home following his impeachment on Friday by Nyeri Members of County Assembly, he will resign in solidarity.

The Governor was impeached after being accused of flouting the constitution and misuse of public funds among other charges.

The law stipulates that in case a Governor loses his seat through impeachment, the Deputy Governor takes over for the remaining term.

"Every decision concerning Nyeri County matters was a collective one and the Governor should not go home alone. They should have impeached me too as I was involved in the decisions," said Wamathai.

He accused the Nyeri County Assembly Speaker Mwangi Mugo of harboring gubernatorial interests and challenged him to resign and declare his interest publicly instead of being used to impeach the governor.

The County Assembly Speaker was accused of barring Govenor Gachagua's lawyers from representing him during the impeachment debate at the assembly last Friday after he ruled that the Governor should defend himself in person.

The Deputy Governor claimed that he had been approached by several politicians asking him to help them fix the Gachagua and make him the governor.

"I am not interested in being the governor since I am contented with my deputy governor's seat. Therefore those approaching me should look elsewhere," he added.

The senate is expected to form a committee to investigate the charges against the governor after receiving a letter from the county assembly speaker on the impeachment.

Governor Gachagua has indicated that he might head to court on Monday to challenge the impeachment.
