Kiambu women representative Ms Anna Nyokabi has decried increased cases of gender based violence in the county.
Nyokabi said counselling centres should be established in the area to deal with these cases.
Nyokabi observed that the centres were a necessity due to the high rate of gender violence especially on women and children which she termed as “worrying.”
“The centre should offer free counselling since the few private centres which are there are not enough and the fee they charge might not be affordable for some people. This will be a good family centre with screening rooms,” she said.
During public sensitisation forum on gender based violence held on Thursday at ACK Cathedral Hall, Nyokabi said such centres should have police officers who will assist the victims seek justice by recording their statements that will enable them carry out investigations into the crimes.
She at the same time, said there was need to start a child protection unit to house children whose rights have been violated either by guardians or society.
“We also want the county assembly to enact strict law to ensure that perpetrators face the full force of the law,” she added.
Over 200 women from Kiambu County were sensitised about gender based violence and urged to be good ambassadors of reporting such cases either to authorities or to the media.
