Stakeholders in technical training institutions in Kiambu have been urged to esure high standards are maintained to impart hands-on skills to learners.
Kiambu County Women Representative Annah Nyokabi says skilled technicians are a major contributor to development in the county while stressing their ability to create own jobs rather than depending on employment.
Speaking at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) during the end of a two-day research conference, the women representative said technical training institutions are best placed to offer practical skills.
She said that the county needs a technical workforce which can only be drawn from the technical training institutions.
Nyokabi said that she has tried to lobby for improvement of infrastructure, and provision of trainers at KIST and other technical institutions in the county saying that there was a significant improvement in the institutions.
“I am also a holder of a diploma in International Relations. After I took political science in the university and failed to secure a place in the job market, I finally went back to school where I got my first employment from a technical course,” she said.
Nyokabi said the notion held by many that technical institutions are for academic failures is retrogressive and untrue.
“The job market curently needs more than at any other time, graduates from technical institutions since practical skills are drivers of wealth creation,” she said.
The Kiambu women representative revealed that plans were underway for an industry partnership for KIST to develop prototypes of building and construction.
