Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o on Friday commissioned large scale farming of sorghum at Kano, Kobura in Nyando sub county.

Accompanied by area MP Jared Okello and Agriculture CeC Gilchrist Okuom, Nyong'o said the project is an initiative of EABL in partnership with the local communities across the county.

He said far farmers had donated approximately 8,000 acres of land for the pilot project to the EABL with West Kano irrigation scheme in Nyando Sub-county leading at 3,500 acres under 'Nyando Holdings for Sorghum Farming' banner.

Kenya Breweries is anticipating up to 5 million Kgs after harvesting the white sorghum which apart from facilitating their production, will also help in local consumptions thus enhancing food production.

Governor Nyong’o pledged his commitment in improving the livelihood of the county residents.

He said his government through the Roads Department will open up rural access roads to ease mobility of farm products such as the sorghum to the market and to the industries.

Speaking at the function, Nyong' said that the county will train tractor operators who will be operating the new tractors that EABL and the county government bought for project. 

Okello requested Equity bank which will be working hand in hand with the locals to support local famers to get soft loans.
