Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang' Nyong'o has released a statement over observing February 8 as Samantha Pendo Human Rights Day.
"THE SAMANTHA PENDO HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
When baby Samantha Pendo was murdered by state goons last year, I said that Kisumu County would dedicate February 8, Samantha's birthday, as the Samantha Pendo Human Rights Day.
I have already instructed my Legal Officer to draft a Bill to be presented to the County Assembly for debate and approval.
Unfortunately, due to the many issues that have cofronted us in the County and nationally, we have not made much progress. We are certain, however, that during this calendar year, the Bill will be presented to the Assembly and we shall, from next year, observe the 8th of February as a special Human Rights Day in Kisumu County.
It makes me extremely sad to see how cheap the Kenyan Police takes our lives to be. What I have seen in the social media regarding our people who have been wantonly killed by the police in Ahero and Kisumu must be condemned in the strongest terms possible.
At the same time my government will follow up this matter systematically as we did the others last year. However long it takes the culprits must be brought before the law and appropriately punished. Hence I appeal for all the records to be kept properly, including the post mortems. LUO LIVES MATTER.
Let me thank all of you who have stood in solidarity with the families of our departed brothers. I am with you all the time.
A Luta Continua.
Anyang' Nyong'o
Governor
Kisumu County."
