Speaking at the burial ceremony in Nyakach, the Governor appreciated Makawiti's great contributions as a school and as the former Vice Chancellor of Maseno University.

He noted that it was during his reign as Vice Chancellor that the School of Medicine was established in Maseno.

"You are a man who lived well, laughed often, and gained the respect of both intelligent and ordinary men with equal measure, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task, who leaves the world better than he found it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. You lived a life less ordinary," Nyong'o stated.

The late Prof died on April 20 at Nairobi.

Prof Makawiti was a distinguished scientist with rich experiences in research, leadership and management.

He served in various universities including Maseno where he was a Vice Chancellor. He also served as a Vice Chairman of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences.
