Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang’ Nyongo is the latest high-profile leader to oppose the use of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct party primary elections.
The Jubilee Party through Majority Leader Aden Duale has hinted plans to have the exchequer fund all JP's nominations prior to the 2017 general elections.
Addressing journalists in Seme on Monday, Nyong’o said the move will water down IEBC’s traditional role of solving disputes after nominations.
“IEBC should never at all be allowed to oversee party primaries. They have a role of handling disputes that arise after the nominations and that will make it difficult to be fair and balanced,” he said.
“The body should stick to its traditional role and those seeking its services should drop the quest. Parties should use their traditional means to nominate candidates."
His sentiments come after North Mugirango MP Charles Geni opposed using of taxpayers money to carry out party nominations.
