Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o gubernatorial bid has receivd a major backing, after Amani National Congress candidate Peter Omollo dropped out of the race.
Omollo, a former Parliament staff, has now thrown his support behind Nyong’o, which increases his chances of clinching the seat.
Speaking during a rally in Kisumu on Thursday, Omollo said his decision was informed by the fact that he wants the alliance to remain united.
“I have decided to back Nyong’o after wider consultations with my supporters. We all have the capacity to be governors but we can only have one governor at a time,” said Omollo.
However, with only three days to go to the polls, his name will still be on the ballot come Tuesday.
Nyong’o, who was present during the rally that was attended by hundreds of residents and NASA leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula commended Omollo for the decision.
Nyong’o will be facing incumbent Jack Ranguma, whom he has vowed to send home for failing to deliver.
“You gave him mandate for five years but he failed to deliver the 2103 promises. He, therefore, has no business to govern the county for another term,” said Nyong’o.
Both political heavyweights feel they have a chance to win the seat.
