Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has castigated people spreading the narrative that he is ailing from cancer.
Speaking on Tuesday at Kisumu International Airport after his arrival from the US where he had gone to seek medication late last year, the prof noted that he was cancer free.
The governor explained that in 2010 he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer but got treatment in the US which saw him recover fully from the ailment.
“I was out of the country for a hip born replacement and not cancer medication. I do not suffer from cancer anymore, “Nyong'o stated.
Governor Nyong'o stressed the need for the public to know that the disease can be treated if it is timely diagnosed, but regretted that the treatment only favored those who are economically well-off, while those with low economic prowess suffered the biggest blow.
“They cannot travel to India, South Africa or the US where they can get appropriate medication," Nyong’o said.
He urged the government through the state department of Health to streamline cancer medication procedures and policies that are friendly to the citizens.
Nyong'o noted that the disease had claimed thousands of lives but explained that the situation would have been different if proper and friendly mitigation had been installed.
The Prof disclosed that the current special kitty provided by the NHIF for cancer patients was one of his flagship projects during his tenure at the Health ministry.
He assured Kisumu residents and Kenyans at large that his administration would work to ensure that the ailment got a proper mitigation to cushion the patients from the wrath unleashed by it.
