The county government of Kisumu has suspended all road construction and repair works.
A press statement from Governor Prof Anyang Nyong'o's office on Tuesday, said the decision arose following prolonged rains which have caused flooding in most parts of the county.
Kisumu is among counties in the country which have received heavy rains since the beginning of April when the long rains spell kicked off.
The suspension was effected following advice from the county's Roads and Public Works Chief Executive Thomas Owiti Ondijo.
"The continued heavy rains have made the roadworks untenable causing constant breakage to machines, un-usability of the project areas and with the effect of possible compromise on overall quality.
"We put on hold all the ongoing county roadworks projects due to the ongoing heavy rains pounding the county. The suspension shall remain in force until the rains subside and the projects sites are accessible," the statement read in part.
Sub counties in the county that have been heavily affected include; Nyando, Nyakach, parts of Muhoroni, Kisumu West and Seme. The only safe area is Kisumu Central.
County leaders including Women Representative Roza Buyu and Prof Nyong'o have been busy distributing relief items to residents affected by the raging floods which have led to the displacement of hundreds of people.
