Nyong’o said there is widespread concern among people that the local administration is frustrating the process.

“I have been receiving phone calls from across the county on frustrations our people go through to acquire IDs. These officers must not run away from their responsibility,” he said.

He said chiefs and their assistants must certify the new applicants before they are approved for the ID registrations.

The Senator told the administrators that they are public servants who swore to serve the public without favour.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Thursday, Nyong’o said the number of people without IDs is massive.

He blamed the previous bureaucratic means of acquiring the document to have contributed to the possession of few IDs.

“You realize that some people at 35 years do not have IDs, why, because in the past it was difficult to go through the process, most of them were giving up,” he said.

The Senator noted that the three days directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta over the issuance of IDs is now applicable in the region.

Long queues have been witnessed at Huduma Centre since the start of IEBC mass voter registration as residents rush to acquire the document.
