Kisumu residents are a happy lot after Governor Anyang' Nyong'o invited them for a fish fiesta over the Easter period.
The locals noted that this is a very important gesture by their governor to recognize their main source of livelihood and heritage passed down over the years.
They explained that the event will raise awareness of the importance of the fishing industry in the lake region.
"Let us celebrate our culture and live up to the legacy of our craftsmanship with the boats,” Said Agnes Omondi.
They locals stated that some of their children as a result of too much ‘westernization’ have forgotten the practice of fishing passed down to them by their predecessors.
“I am happy and I will bring a long my two children to get an understanding of our culture. Without teaching them this culture it will erode over the years has it has now,” Moses Tumbo said.
Others, however, criticized the Governor for setting conditions for accessing the fiesta and specifically the condition on buying a beer.
“I am so pleased with the event and especially the opportunity to have a chance to celebrate my favorite meal with the great people of the lake region but I am disappointed with the part of having to buy a beer to gain access to the entrance.
"The Governor should lead by example on the fight against drug and alcoholism. In my opinion, alcohol would have been banned completely on that occasion,” Nicholas Ojok opined.
Others took to social media to congratulate the Governor on the event.
“I can’t wait to be at Hippo Point on that day. It’s one of its kind and I wonder where the Governor will get all the fish to feed its people but all the same we will be there for the big day,” Joyce Malin stated.
