The National Youth Service have now spread their interest from Thika’s Kiandutu Estate and moved forward to Umoja Estate within Thika’s Makongeni estate ahead of the launching

The clean up exercise which left Kiandutu Estate in a state not expected any sooner, now have been kick started in Umoja whereby they started with repairing the road network leading to the slum estate.

The residents could not hide their happiness although they were frightened at first on sight of the National Youth Service bulldozers.

Rose Muthoni a resident from the area saying that they were not expecting the visitors. She said that the last time they saw bulldozers they were in a mission to demolish their houses in an operation which left more than 500 families homeless.

“We were at first worried that the bulldozers were coming to demolish out houses again but we felt relieved when they started constructing the road and we saw the light shine at the end of the road. We want to thank our president for thinking about us,” Muthoni said.

The NYS officers are in troops whereby some of them are cleaning up the area while others are collecting and others doing development like repairing of roads.

Umoja slum upgrade started on Friday and expected to be complete within two weeks before they proceed to Madharau slum which is adjacent to Umoja.
